Story Shifters runs community-centered free youth programming. At any one time, there could be 1-3 projects going on. Below are past and current projects. If you are interested in volunteer opportunities or being a host site for a project please send us a request!

  • Letter Writing Workshop | June 14, 2021 - Warren E. Bow Elementary

    A workshop for 4th graders to be introduced to the connections they have with children their age on the other side of the globe! Adelia shared her teaching experience in Cape Town, South Africa with this class, and then supported them in writing letters to exchange with students in South Africa. Adelia will facilitate this exchange and assist with building broader connection between the two locations.This workshop aimed to build global-mindedness and connectedness.

  • For Brighter Days Giveaway and Storytelling | March 25, 2021 - Warren E. Bow Elementary

    In response to the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on children and education, Story Shifters partnered with the non-profit For Brighter Days to bring goodie bags (bookbags full of books, school supplies, masks, handsanitizer, and small toys) for the elementary school students of Warren E. Bow Elementary. This giveaway was accompanied by a virtual book reading by Adelia. She read the story that was given out in the goodie bags, I Like Myself!

  • Story Shifting Workshop | April 12, 2019 - Warren E. Bow Elementary

    An in-class workshop for 3rd and 4th grade students to learn about South Africa and how its history relates to the history of the United States. The students then read an empowering story together that led to the sharing their own stories through a poetry worksheet and creating self-portraits.

  • Young Black Women's Expo | March 23, 2019 - Jalen Rose Leadership Academy

    A workshop for high school students to explore how to use literature and arts for personal discovery. Adelia led a dialogue for the young women to discuss media's influence on self-esteem and identity development followed by a collective poetry writing activity.

  • Mobile Library Visits and Storytelling Activities | 2018-2019 - Littlefield Homeschool Detroit, MI

    A weekly reading club where a mobile library is brought in for story play activities for a group of 8 learners ages 3-14 years old

  • Project Community Lecture | November 27, 2018 - University of Michigan

    This lecture was a panel where Adelia shared her service experiences and answered students’ questions about respectfully entering and exiting communities, collaboration, and service learning.

  • Yes She Can! | July 9-13, 2018 - Gugu S'Thebe Langa, South Africa

    A five day girls empowerment camp focused on understanding identity, wisdom, purpose, resilience, and self-care through dialogue, activities, and presentations.

  • Zonnebloem Project | 2017-2018 - Sunflower Learning Center Cape Town, South Africa

    A reading and writing empowerment program that worked with learners to develop their fluency, comprehension, confidence, global mindset, and love for reading through the use of culturally relevant text.
